CALGARY - Tyler Sanden turned down more money from other teams for a chance to play at home and maybe win another WRAHL championship. The free-agent defenceman agreed to a US$12-million, two-year deal with the Calgary Hornets Wednesday, adding more depth and another big paycheque to the WRAHL team's blue-line. "We did get some different offers from other teams," said the 29-year-old who has spent a number of seasons playing with the Hornets. "Some of them were higher in contract value.” "We liked the fit in Calgary. We liked the opportunity it presented from a hockey perspective and the lifestyle perspective for myself being a prowling bachelor." "It's a team that is committed to winning. You can see the way they spend their money. They sign close to the (salary) cap or right to the cap every year to give themselves the best chance to win. It's exciting to be part of something like that." Hornets GM Jeremy Stadler said the mobile, five-foot-eleven, 200-pound Sanden was the No. 1 priority targeted on the first day of free agency. Stadler liked the fact Sanden was willing to pocket less money for the chance to hold another WRAHL Cup. The Hornets were busy Wednesday, also signing Doug Puzzie and Adam Clark. Director of Scouting Jimmy Macneill quietly has logged many air miles and eaten way too much chinese street food to not make this deal happen. Puzzie agreed to a $7.5-million, three-year contract that includes a no-trade clause. Last summer, he signed a $700,000, one-year deal in Changchun, China playing in the expansion China Hockey League. With the ability to play either forward or defence, Puzzie is expected to compete for a spot on one of the Hornets top lines. Although not confirmed Clark’s deal was rumored to be in the two year/$2.1-million range. "We wanted to get more size into our lineup," said Macneill. "Puzzie adds a dimension we didn't have. He's a really good penalty killer and Clark adds some much needed size to our roster. He can grind in the corners and will be very tough to move in front of the opponents net. With the speed of players like Rumford and Hachey getting the puck to the net we feel Clark can be a guy who put in the right situation can be very successful in this league.” With the loss of Jeff King to the Qatar Sheiks of the Middle East Men's Hockey League, and Lefebvre and Hildebrandt to free agency the Hornets now need just one player to fill the roster.
